  • "For how long have you been performing, ma'am?" I asked her during the shoot. She replied saying that she started performing in 1986 and for a brief moment, my head took a pause from everything to wonder what I was doing around the same time. I was perhaps playing around and scrapping my knees. And to think a little back, Bombay Jayashri ji (@jayashriramnath) gave her first concert in 1982! Its overwhelming to think about the kind of dedication and love they must have had for their art, over so many years and still counting! I feel super happy doing this series, shooting with such amazing and experienced artists! They are a true inspiration!

And I think, people who are getting into photography now should think about permanency. When you think of it as a permanent career, the way you think about it changes. Your perceptions change and so do your actions. Don't look at it as something you'd do for 2-3 years and then quit. You need to spend tens of thousands of hours to attain mastery in a craft. That will take 10 years, 15 years and more. When you quit after just a couple of years, you will be quitting as a beginner. So think of it, whether photography or anything you want to choose, as a permanent thing. It always takes more time than you can imagine to achieve something amazing.

  • This was the last shot we took and it is a semi candid. I asked him to sing and when he did, the hand gesture looked really good to me. So I asked him to stop, and pose exactly like that. Asking him to turn the hand towards the camera, head towards the light and finally saying “be SUPER HAPPY!” like I always do, got us this shot.

  • This picture came out as a surprise. We got a new bar stool in the studio and I’ve been waiting to shoot with it. So I asked him if he could sit on that along with his instrument. I just intended to see how it would look, took a couple of quick shots and I loved it! The pose, colour of his outfit, the instrument and the wonderful backdrop just came in together perfectly!

  • One of the things we agreed upon in our conversations is that its really really important to have a supportive family and spouse for a creative. Many people ask me so many times how I balance my personal and work life. That's a simple, yet a serious question because life gets very tough for a creative professional. Especially if you are a busy one. It gets really tough with all work and time you need to give to your craft to grow. And once you grow, it becomes even tougher. So, the biggest thing you need is family support. Without that, your foundation will weaken and collapse very easily. In my case, I get a big support from my wife. Now, the precise balance remains in not exploiting that support. You should not misuse that support given to you. Many people who get into photography and other fields of art, get a hit on personal life. I read a book, "Notes of a Dream", one of the things the books talks about is how the artist's wife takes care of everything in his life and supports him through his journey. The parents too play a very huge role in giving in this support. There's an army of people behind the endeavors of every artist. This post is dedicated to them.

  • We wanted to try something different in a close up. So I asked her to cover her face with the Banjo to show only the eyes. Even in such a tight shot, I love how the eyes carry her personality!

  • What I look to capture, more than the person, is their personality. Everyone has a different one and once that begins to come out, the process of the shoot becomes so much more fun. That’s exactly what happened with her when I asked her to just be herself. She was spontaneous and quirky through the whole shoot.

  • One of the things I get to witness with every musician I shoot is watching them enter into their zone. Its just one of the most beautiful things. To see them stand or perhaps sit, strike a chord and experience the music with plainly their soul and nothing else is blissful and honestly, fills you with content. Its a form of catharsis on its own to be on this journey with everyone of them.

Thank you @sadhana_senthil for the wonderful makeup. #margazhi #carnatic #music #indian #musician #portraits #artist
  • I find myself comparing photography to poetry from time to time. There's a striking similarity, I believe, the two have. Both have tools used to communicate something beautiful. In both cases, more than mere knowledge of the tools, what you need is understanding of what fits where better and how. For example, knowing the definition of a metaphor will not help. You must understand what two things fit in together to form an amazing metaphor and learn, a step at a time, to write one. Similarly, more than knowing what your camera does, you should understand what you can do with it. You need to have an understanding of the world for both the crafts. They require you, also, to dedicate your time to practice the skill. Knowing about alliteration and assonance will not bring rhythm into your head. Knowing the trend will not instinctively enable you to make those amazing pictures. You must practice. Not once, not twice, you just should, consistently. Both the crafts have a way of containing a million meanings within. What, however, is a major difference is when one reads a beautifully penned poem, they don't ask which pen it was written with, they ask for the poet. When one sees an extraordinary picture, they don't ask for the photographer, they ask for the camera it was taken with.

His love for travelling took him to places, not only outside the country but necessarily back to his roots where he discovered the endless treasure hidden in the state of Tamil Nadu. The rich culture, the hardworking people, the pristine nature, the authentic food, and so much more caught him in a spell, and hence born was DISCOVER TAMIL NADU, an initiative to document Tamil Nadu in a visually appealing way to let the world know its abundance.
